A number of years ago, when St Wilfrid’s on Mereside closed for worship, the Mother’s Union made the brave decision to keep meeting. They met in each other’s homes, supported each other and carried on the valuable work of the Mother’s Union. When I moved on Mereside I had the honour of visiting with them once or twice a year to update them on the progress of my ministry on the estate, starting something new. From the beginning they were very supportive and always keen to hear the latest news, as well as offering their support where they could! I was grateful for support with volunteers to help out at holiday club, donations towards supporting the most needy in our parish, and even referring people to the Mother’s Union caravan for families needing a well-deserved break.
To my utter delight and joy, a few months ago, I was approached by the St Wilfrid’s Mother’s Union asking if they could become our Mother’s Union. I was so happy to take this proposal to the PCC who welcomed the idea wholeheartedly.
On Thursday 30th September 2021, we welcomed the Mother’s Union to Freedom Church Mereside at our 2pm service. They rededicated themselves to the work of the Mother’s Union in our parish, and our church pledged their support to their work, and even the banner now hangs proudly on the wall next to the stage.
I am very much looking forward to seeing how this relationship grows and develops, I can see exciting times ahead. I’ve even got my hands on the gift catalogue which I am very excited about as there are lots of lovely things in it to order.
But one thing that always makes me smile is every time I pick up a tea towel in Martha’s kitchen to dry up some dishes, I think of the Mother’s Union as they so kindly provided them for us when we were starting out. And I become aware yet again of their commitment to selfless service, in the name of Jesus. May we be inspired by their example!
